| Janet GUMBLETON was the daughter of John Thomas GUMBLETON and Martha (formerly SIMONS). She was born in 1881, in Camberwell RD. In 1901, she was living with her parents at 40 Newnham Rd, Bedford. She and her sister Elizabeth were hosiery manufacturers in Bedford. They appeared in a directory in 1910. In 1915, they were granted a patent for a 'new improved leg covering' - a type of knitted gaiter. At the time of the 1911 census, Janet was a visitor at Battle Field House, 2 Chequer Street, St Albans, with the family of Edward Cherry, a photographic artist. Janet's sister Elizabeth died 6 Oct 1921 in Corfe Castle Dorset, where she was buried. Janet was the beneficiary of her will. In 1923, she travelled to New South Wales, Australia, apprently visiting a brother in Bathurst. This brother is believed to be Robert George GUMBLETON (1878). In 1924 she travelled to Bermuda, and visited the USA, where she was recorded at Ellis Island as of height 5' 3.5” with fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. In 1931, she was living at 91B Kensington Gardens Square. She is believed to have lived at Hereward Avenue, Birchington for some years around 1930. A 1936 directory shows her living at Maenport, Hereward Avenue. She died aged 64 in Camberwell R.D. on 16 Apr 1947. After her death, her house in Birchington-on-Sea seems to have gone to her brother Josiah GUMBLETON, whose widow lived there in the 1950s. | ||
